Federal Republic of Somalia is a country on the Horn of Africa. In antiquity, Somalia was an important commercial center. It is among the most probable locations of the fabled ancient *Land of Punt. *Mogadishu – A major port city, varied and thriving commerce, the national capital. Liido Beach (map) and Gezira Beach (map) near Mogadishu are very beautiful. *Hargeisa (map) – the capital of Somaliland and, by Somalian standards, a fairly safe place.
Somalia has a number of local attractions, consisting of historical sites, beaches, waterfalls, mountain ranges and national parks. Notable sights include the *Laas Geel caves (map) containing Neolithic rock art; the *Cal Madow (map), Golis Mountains and Ogo Mountains; the *Iskushuban (map) and *Lamadaya waterfalls (map).
Armed robbery and killings are common on buses in Somalia including Somaliland.
Many governments advise against all travel to Somalia because of the constant threat of terrorist attacks, including against hotels and sites that tourists may visit, and because of the likelihood of kidnapping.
