United States / USA

USA. Travel information

USA – it is a “melting pot” of cultures from around the world and a wide variety of attractions. Skyscrapers of Manhattan (map) and Chicago, to the natural wonders of Yellowstone (map) and Alaska, to the canyonlands of the Southwest, to the warm, sunny beaches of Florida, Hawaii and Southern California.

The United States / USA is not the America of television and movies. It is large, complex, and diverse, with distinct cultural and regional identities.

One of the world’s greatest cities, New York (known as “The Big Apple”, “NYC,” and often called “New York City”) is a global center for media, entertainment, art, fashion, research, finance, and trade. The city’s neighborhoods and streets are so iconic they have become ingrained into the American consciousness. Immigrants (and their descendants) from over 180 countries live here, making it one of, if not the most cosmopolitan city in the world. The diverse population runs the gamut from some of America’s wealthiest celebrities and socialites to homeless people.

National Historic Landmark (wiki) – are historic properties that illustrate the heritage of the United States. The almost 2,600 NHLs found in the USA today come in many forms: historic buildings, sites, structures, objects, and districts. Each NHL represents an outstanding aspect of American history and culture.

Grand Canyon (+ visitarizona.com) — the world’s longest and most visited canyon. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (map) — national park in the southern Appalachians. Walt Disney World (map) — the most popular vacation resort destination in the world. Yellowstone National Park (map) — the first national park in the U.S., and home of the *Old Faithful (map) geyser. Yosemite National Park (map) — home of El Capitan (map), Half Dome (map), and famous Giant Sequoia trees.

America’s low population density compared to Europe, large number of National Parks, and rugged country in the West and the Appalachians are major factors that have formed America’s hiking opportunities that exist today. Particularly in mountainous regions, protected areas (such as National Parks) are often geared more to hikers than anyone else.

Essentially all of the United States National Parks have hiking opportunities. These will vary depending on the park. Trails will usually be shown on park maps. America’s National Trails System ( + *Hiking in the United States)
